The rear rubber elements are attached to the differential with studs. The rear rubber elements are attached to the differential cover with studs. The composite transverse leaf spring is attached to the lower rear axle member using a rubber element which is vulcanised to the cap. The outer ends of the spring rest on rubber elements in the lower control arms. The spring is available in three variants with different spring constants depending on whether the car is a 4-door or 5-door model, or is equipped with NIVOMAT shock absorbers.Due to the different suspension characteristics the rubber bump stops are modified. The upper control arm is identical to the earlier version, while its front inner rubber bushing is a new design and has a different mounting to the rear axle member. The drive shafts have no flanges or bolted joints and now comprise a single unit and are attached to the final drive with lock rings. The drive shafts have CV joints as before. There are two different drive shafts available depending on the engine variant, a lighter for cars with 2.5 liter engines and a heavier for cars with 3 liter engines. The differential housing is of cast iron which gives low noise levels. The gears and other inner components are identical to those used in the 1030 and 1035 rear axles, except for the a new improved pinion seal. Depending on engine and gearbox, the differential is available with either 3.73:1 or 4.1:1 final drive.
