SIPS (Side Impact Protection System)

The introduction of SIPS on the 1992 Volvo 940/960 offered considerable improvement in side collision protection through reinforcements in the B-posts and sills. SIPS has been enhanced and improved in the 1995 Volvo 960 by the introduction of energy absorbers and structure blocks.

Energy absorbers and structure blocks

The purpose of the energy absorbers is to absorb collision energy which they do by deforming in a particular way. The structure blocks stiffen a specific area of the bodywork to distribute the collision forces across a larger area of the bodywork thus reducing the forces. Due to the differences in body structure around the front and rear doors the reinforcement requirements for them differ.

Doors

Rear doors

The following has been added to the back doors.

  • A structure block secured between the inner and outer panel in the bottom edge of the door. The block transfers collision forces to the sills and member under the rear seat.
  • An energy absorber bonded to the inside of the door panel to reduce hip injuries.

Since 4 mm glass has been introduced to the rear doors as well, the guide strip has also been modified.

Improved interior door handle and new lock button

The new interior door handle is easier and more convenient to use. The lock button is beside the door handle. A cable runs from the door handle and lock button to the lock which is adapted for cable activation. Using a cable rather than a link rod improves both collision and anti-theft protection.

Front doorpanels

Bonded into position on the front doors are:

  • Two energy absorbers, one at chest and one at hip level.
  • A structure block in the door panels lower rear section, to transfer collision forces to the seat frame.

Inner door panel

Behind the door panel is a single piece extruded door seal secured with a special adhesive so that it can be fitted and removed a number of times. The door seal covers the entire inner door panel and has been added to:

  • Reduce road noise in the passenger compartment.
  • Locate and secure the door wiring better.
  • Act as condensation and moisture run-off protection.

Improved door loudspeaker mounting

To allow installation of larger loud speakers in both front and rear doors and better sound reproduction, the speakers are mounted lower in the door and are mounted in the inner door plate instead of the outer door panel.
