Dashboard

• The upper part of the has the same color as the rest of the interior (grey, beige or black).
• The skin (the outermost surface) is of new and improved quality.
• The air inlets on the dashboard vents are rounded and have new thumbwheel controls.
• The dials in the combined instrument panel are light grey.
• The instrument surround has been rounded. The control panels are fitted against the surround in order to minimize play.
• The radio console has been integrated with the right hand control panel in order to remove joints.
• The electrical switches on the control panels as well as the rotary switches on the climate controls are rounded and have an improved ergonomic design.
• The decor trims have been shortened and consist of solid aluminium section.

Due to the new dashboard controls, the method for dismantling the climate control system and combined instrument panel has changed.

Interior trim

Option of more wood in the interior fittings

Lacquered walnut veneer is available as an option or standard for the control panels, radio console, cigar lighter socket, rear end of the center console and in the form of a decor trim on the door panels. The wood is applied to the plastic panels that in certain places are reinforced by sheet metal at the rear.

Fully color matched interior for beige interior

The wheel, wheel covers and seat belts are also beige with a beige interior.

Leather upholstery

Leather upholstery has saddle stitching in the seams as on the 850 and there are two shades of light beige and light grey. As an option there is also the limited leather alternative for the 960, which is also wrinkle finish but with slightly more marked armrests thanks to a different padding.

New doorpanels

• The door opener is of a new type for easier opening.
• The lock button is moved and integrated in the door opener.
• The armrest is wider.
• The speakers are larger and have better mounting for improved sound quality.
• The storage bins in the front doors are larger.
• The sills have an ID decal in a three-dimensional design bearing the 960 badge.
• Since the new door panels are somewhat wider, the seat storage trays are somewhat smaller.

Improved sound comfort

Sound absorbent panels have been progressively introduced during the 1994 model year in order to reduce interior noise. Increased sound insulation will be installed during production, to reduce for example noise transmitted via the cargo area in station wagons (5-door). This will contribute to the new Volvo 960 being experienced as a much quieter car than previously. The quieter passenger compartment combined with improvements to the speaker system will also improve audio quality.

Miscellaneous

• The small 850 airbag steering wheel (375 mm) replaces the present one.
• A higher and more comfortable armrest is available as an option or standard, with twin storage boxes and integrated cupholders for both front and rear seat passengers.
• Right-hand drive cars can now be equipped with an airbag on the passenger side.
• On station wagons (5-doors)the push button function on the child cushion is replaced by a friction hinge for locking between the backrest and cushion.
• The same type of luggage blind that is available as an extra will be added as as option or standard on station wagons.
