Road holding
Increased wheel offset from 25 to 43 mm
The rims have a greater offset, that is to say the mounting plane of the rims toward the brake disc is located further out. The modified offset, which now is the same as for 850, has meant that the brake discs and the hub have also been modified. If rims with incorrect offset are installed it will alter the front end geometry at the risk of compromising road handling characteristics and causing the tire to contact the edge of the fender. Rims from the earlier 940/960 cars must not be used on the new 960 models or vice versa!
Ball joint moved out - reduced sensitivity to wheel imbalance
Ball joint has been moved further out, which has greatly affected the entire front end geometry, with the exception of toe-in angle, which is unchanged. As before, the toe-in angles are adjusted by adjusting the tie-rod length. Moving the ball joint out has resulted in a greater king pin angle (Angle), which has reduced the lever effect. The new suspension is less sensitive to vibrations from, for example, unbalanced wheels.
Screw mounting between spring strut and spindle
The spring strut mounting to the spindle consists of screw joint. Should the camber angle need adjusting, this is done as before by changing the position of the suspension strut front mounting screw in the wheel housing tower.
Modified track width
The track width has been increased from 1,471 mm to 1,502 mm. Together with a change in camber angle from +0.3o to -0.7o this means that roadholding has improved in that the wheels are more or less vertically aligned when there is a small degree of roll. This also has a positive effect on tire wear
Smaller turning diameter
Thanks to the new front end, it has also been possible to introduce more favorable cornering angles. They have been changed so that the inside wheel now turns more than before in a curve. As a result, the car can perform sharp turns in more comfort with less tire wear, and the turning diameter has been further reduced from 9,9 m to 9,7 m.
Good feel through the steering wheel even at higher speeds
In order to retain road feel in the steering wheel while driving at higher speeds, in spite of increased power steering effect, the caster offset has been increased so the steering wheel bears and more firmly toward the neutral position following a turn.
Better brake quality
Camber offset, i.e. the distance, measured on road surface, between the wheel pivot axle and wheel center line, has been changed from a positive dimension of 33 mm to become slightly negative (-3 mm). This reduces the tendency of the car to pull unevenly during braking which mainly occurs when the tyres have different levels of grip.
Better "feel" on the brake pedal
In order to reduce pedal travel the brake pedal bearing point in the pedal set has been altered. In order to create room in the engine compartment and reduce the pedal force during sharp braking, a 2 x 8" power brake booster instead of the earlier 10".
Brake caliper
The brake calipers are similar to the earlier ones. The difference is that the caliper retainer has a cast on collar. This is to remove any noise that may occur during light application.
New wheel rims
The 960 spare tire has been redesigned. The wheel is built to provide full stability with and without ABS control. It is the same type as the one used for 850, but different in both tire size and rim offset. For this reason the wheel rims are not interchangeable!Spiked Winter tires for the 1995 960 car must use a 195/65 tire. The 185/65 tire does not provide enough support. Two 15" light alloy wheel rims are available with 18 and 5 spokes respectively, with associated hubs. Intended for 195/65 tires. Two 16" light alloy wheel rims are available with 20 and 7 spokes respectively, both with visible chrome nuts . Intended for 205/55 tires.A 15" steel rim with newly designed wheel hub and 195/65 tires. The steel rim is same as the 1994 850 on which 5 stud wheel rims were introduced. The wheelrim offset is 43 mm.
