STD, StandardThe climate controls to the Volvo 960 are available in three versions, all with the same distribution housing and the following controls:

  • ECC, Electronic Climate Control
  • MCC, Manual Climate Control with air conditioning (A/C)
  • STD, Standard without air conditioning (A/C)

Apart from the A/C button the temperature scale on the MCC controls differs from that of the STD controls.

R134a label withdrawn

Immediately after the end of the model year the R134a label around the filler valve will be withdrawn. Information that the car contains the refrigerant R134a remain in the form of other decals in the engine compartment. The label remains in the "retro-fit" kit for the R134a however.

Climate control

Based on the ECC heater

The MCC and STD have in common with ECC:

  • an electrical servo motor for controlling the air mixture damper.
  • a solenoid valve to control the vacuum vessels that open/close the damper.
  • a vacuum tank integrated with the evaporator cover.

Common "over ride" functions

The following applies to all three controls:

  • Recirculation is disengaged whenever the defroster is chosen.

In the case of ECC and MCC:

  • A/C is engaged when the defroster is selected, no matter what the position of the A/C button is.
  • A/C is disengaged when the blower fan is switched off.

Differences in the air distribution housings

The differences between the distributor housings of the STD and MCC and that of the ECC are:

  • The power stage is replaced by a blower resistor containing a fusible link. If this is triggered the blower operates in position 5 only and the resistor must be replaced.
  • There are no temperature sensors for either incoming air or warmed air and the holes for these are plugged.
  • There is no evaporator for the STD but the cover is the same as for the others.
  • Other vacuum system cabling is different because the sensors are absent.

A/C relay in the relay/fusebox

The air conditioning (A/C) relay is located in the relay/fusebox in the engine compartment. The A/C is withdrawn from ECC power circuit. The Motronic 1.8 control module activates the A/C relay based on a signal from the climate control A/C button.

100% recirculation

All controls are fully electrical and have a recirculation switch. When activated the recirculation shutter closes, so no outside air enters the passenger compartment. This is to be able to cool a hot passenger compartment rapidly and shut out fumes in traffic jams etc.

Improved side defroster function

Side defroster function will be improved throughout the autumn. There will be a small bi-level shutter bypass leading air to the side defrosters even when the distribution selector is in the defroster, bi-level and floor positions.
