Offset collision protection has been considerably improved on the 960 by:

• New bumper attachments
• Linked side members
• Reinforced wheel arches

The new bumper attachments and the tube that links the rear of the side members cause part of the force of the collision to be transmitted and absorbed by the opposite side members. The other advantage is that the members better retain their location and stability during a collision.

New front bumper mounting

The bumper has a heavy aluminium rail bolted directly onto the side members as with the 850. The rail is coated with energy absorbing foam and a plastic outer skin. There are no gas struts and the side members are longer. Their outer section has an internal box member to guide the side member deformation. This is almost the same function achieved by the gas struts on the 940. In the 960 low collision forces are absorbed by the energy absorbing foam.Through this new bumper concept the collision forces are modified and the SRS sensors adapted with new software. The sensors on 1995 model year 960s are not interchangeable with earlier ones!

Linked side members

The front side members have been linked at the rear with a heavy tube. The tube is attached to brackets, welded to the side members, which also act as rear mounting points for the control arms.In conjunction with these changes the towing eyes are now bolted to the side members.

Reduced risk of wheel penetration of passenger compartment

The wheel housings have been reinforced to prevent the wheel penetrating the passenger compartment in event of a collision. The reinforcemnt consists of a welded HSS (high strength steel) plate. The plate is grooved and stiffens the area around the wheelhouse and just behind.

Single piece member over radiator

The member over the radiator is one piece and has locating pins which locate the front fenders. This means that the front fenders, headlamps and grille have very little room for adjustment. The grille can only adjusted sideways and the front fenders only at the back. Apart from facilitating production work this also ensures better clearances and fit.

New sun roof

A new sun roof replaces earlier versions. It is only available in glass and electrically powered. The design is completely new, while the power operation is the same as before. To ensure a good seal the frame in which the mechanism operates is integrated into the sun roof base plate. This means that if the cable needs changing the base plate needs to be removed from the car.

Reinforced 5 door body for Multilink rear suspension

The 5 door bodywork has been reinforced in a number of places to better absorb the loads that occur with a multi-link rear axle. There are reinforcements around the wheel arches, the rear door openings and the upper parts of the B-, C- and D-posts.

Adjustments as a result of modified exterior

• New front fenders because of wider turn signal lamps, different styling and new attachment to member over radiator.
• The sills have number of holes for clips to hold the molding/
• The holes for the waist trim installation clips are now in the centre of the body work impression.
• The station wagon rear door has holes for attaching the rear waist trim.
• The station wagon tailgate has holes for securing the spoiler. Due to the spoiler the hole for the rear washer has been moved.
• The inner plate in the doors has extra holes for securing the new door panel.

Modifications as a result of the modified electrical system

Apart from various relocations of ground points and weld screws for locating cabling the following has been changed:

• The left hand collision brace is bolted rather than welded to facilitate cable routing during production.
• New grommets in the firewall.
